Good News from Lansdowne and Tacony

  • View of the renovated pavilion from the park entrance

We received good news from two past recipients of Collaborative design grants last month.

Erica Sollberger, Director of Parks and Recreation for Lansdowne Borough, reports that the borough has been awarded $185,000 by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to further develop plans for renovating the Hoffman Park Pavilion. The mid-century modern pavilion was a focus of master plan for park improvements completed by the Collaborative in 2013. The grant, along with $250,000 already earmarked by the borough, will help pay for refining the design, creating construction documents, and putting the project out to bid.

  • Volunteer Sharmila Syed consults with the owner of Wellens.

Alex Balloon, Corridor Manager for Tacony CDC, reports that another storefront on Torresdale Avenue has been renovated. The Collaborative consulted with six Torresdale Avenue store owners, including the owner of Wellens Hosiery, to map out facade improvement priorities in 2012. Since then, Alex has championed this series of facade improvement projects, which will lead to more inviting, open storefronts and the preservation of historic details along Tacony's primary neighborhood shopping street. Read Alex's recent account of the project from start to finish. It's a great primer on a typical storefront facade improvement project in Philadelphia—an "update" that removes past renovations to get closer to the bones of the original facade.
