  • Meredith Green Conceptual Plan: A bioswale grows in Philly.

The Community Design Collaborative's design assistance got Meredith School on Philadelphia magazine's DIY School Reform honor roll for their plans to green their schoolyard. See #4 - Make it prettier. The volunteer professional design team mentioned in the story included creative folks from Viridian Landscape Studio, Urban Engineers, and Duffield Associates.

Public school teachers, parents, and kids are working hard to improve their schools—and we can be a resource.

In just the past two years, the Collaborative's volunteers have led community task force meetings and completed conceptual designs for home and school associations at Jackson, Masterman, Meredith, McCall, and Powell Schools. Our conceptual designs help launch school community campaigns to green schoolyards, renovate a library, and rethink a multi-purpose space to support a successful music program.

We're working with five additional public schools right now:
  • Stanton Elementary School in Southwest Center City
  • Hackett Elementary School  in Kensington
  • William McKinley School in Kensington
  • William D. Kelley School in Brewerytown
  • Zane North in Collingswood
We've also awarded design grants to Southwark Elementary in East Passyunk and W.B. Saul High School in Roxborough and will working with these schools in 2014.

  • Schools at work: Stanton's school community considers greening strategies in November 2014.
