Design Workshop Gives Community a Voice

  • Representatives from five West Philadelphia neighborhoods participated in the workshop.

A design workshop hosted by the Community Design Collaborative gave West Philadelphia neighborhoods served by People’s Emergency Center a voice in the reuse of the former site of University City High School and Drew Elementary School.

Volunteer designers and representatives from five civic associations – Mantua Civic Association, Mantua Community Improvement Committee, Powelton Village Civic Association, Saunders Park Neighbors and West Powelton Concerned Community Council - collaborated on redevelopment scenarios to meet the needs of the community during the facilitated design workshop. The findings and recommendations resulting from the workshop provided the basis for the community’s compelling testimony about site reuse at a School Reform Commission meeting in late March.

The Collaborative hosted the workshop in partnership with People’s Emergency Center, Interface Studio, and V. Lamar Wilson Associates.
