Two inventive Collaborative volunteer teams brought playfulness to public spaces this summer. One team designed giant P-L-A-Y letters and other fun stuff for Philly Play's Day of Play Extravaganza at Dilworth Park on July 27. The other team designed and built a temporary "pallet patio" with checkerboards, chalkboards, chimes, and benches for Glen Foerd on the Delaware just in time for the park's Jazz Age party on July 30.
Volunteers from Sikora Wells Appel and db-3d worked with Philly Play on placemaking elements for its citywide play date, which drew hundreds of children from Philadelphia Parks and Recreation summer camp programs, people visiting for the DNC, and people living and working in Center City. The Day of Play Extravaganza offered lots of active, hands-on activities that reflect Philly Play's mission: to help kids live healthier lives by giving families access to active play opportunities.
Design savvy (and considerable sweat) went into creating the temporary "pallet patio" at Glen Foerd on the Delaware. Our team of seven volunteers are currently collaborating with residents, city agencies, educational specialists, nearby residents, and others to re-envision the historic estate's garden house as a safe, fun play space. The temporary patio will allow children and their families to try out different play elements and give Glen Foerd feedback before it finalizes plans and programming for the garden house.
