Situated in the middle of North Philadelphia, adjacent to Temple University’s main campus, the Berean Presbyterian Church maintains a strong presence. The historically significant building consists of a Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall built in the late 1800s. Berean’s space can support a congregation of 800, but its numbers have dwindled over time and much of their space is currently underutilized. The Collaborative’s design grant helped Berean conceptualize a transformation of the Church into a community hub focused on youth development. The proposed design offers spaces for learning, worship, gathering, and celebrating, accommodating programs such as summer camps, skills training and computer labs. The design elegantly modernizes the structure and functionality of the site with exterior green gathering spaces, inviting entryways, flexible spaces, and accessibility throughout, all while maintaining its historical presence.
"Design isn’t something we impose upon a community. It’s more about uncovering the identity and potential of a place."
"Design is vital to both revitalize and maintain communities. Design and change within a community can spark confidence and pride in members of the community, which in turn makes for a healthier, happier, and safer environment."
"Design helps to provide visioning for a community. This visioning helps to excite a community about possibilities in shared public spaces."
Design is an important part of the revitalization process because, often times, members of a community know that they want to improve their community, but they don't know how to implement those ideas. Design helps to put those ideas into physical drawings and forms.
"'Design' may be something that not everybody fully understands, but the quality of our environment has an impact on all of us."
