Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church is a historic landmark and the birthplace of the A.M.E. denomination. In addition to its sanctuary, the church houses the Richard Allen Museum and Mother Bethel Archives. The Mother Bethel Foundation received a design grant from the Collaborative to create a plan for renovation and expansion. A new three-story addition is proposed in place of the existing Sunday School wing. The addition will expand the world-renowned museum and archive and provide ADA accessibility, community and classroom spaces, and new building systems throughout the facility.
"It [design] directly impacts communities and how effectively residents are able to utilize neighborhood assets."
"All the design team members have great experiences and ideas, but it's the community that has the intimate experiences and ideas that are needed to develop the project concepts and designs."
" I find that interacting with the people and groups that the collaborative works with restores my faith in humanity and our ability to create common good."
