Why is design an important part of revitalizing communities?
Design is a reflection of how we see ourselves or how we wish to perceive ourselves. It makes systems function and can be aspirational. Creating environments that are functional, beautiful, and respectful of the past can be the basis of a cultural and emotional respect that allow for the building of community connections.
What has been most surprising, rewarding, or fun about working on a project with the Collaborative?
The most rewarding aspect of volunteering with the Collaborative is how much I learn about all different aspects of design - from playgrounds to plumbing! It's all so interesting.
Q. What do you love most about Philly?
Along with its walkability and manageable size, I'd have to say:
Three centuries of architecture that surround us. It creates such a sense of place and texture and connection.
Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell - we not only have "the room where it happened," but the building and the city where it happened too. They still have the power to move me. What an amazing accomplishment - the creation of a nation.
Springtime all over the region when the flowering trees are in bloom - just magnificent.
Lore's Chocolates on South 7th Street.
