Why is design an important part of revitalizing communities?
Design that is driven by community engagement helps to lead to places that are not only more inclusive and accessible to existing residents, but is also a way to promote greater civic engagement by giving people an active voice in the way their communities are shaped.
What has been most surprising, rewarding, or fun about your Collaborative experience?
The opportunity to engage with different firms, people, and organizations outside of my typical lines of work was really interesting. Specifically, being able to get a closer look at the nuanced design changes of a project derived from community input.
What do you love most about Philadelphia?
The entrepreneurial spirit from all the tight-knit communities across the city. There are so many unique histories to be encountered all over, in terms of the way communities define and use space. This results in a vast set of events, gatherings, shops and businesses that helps make the city so unique. Having grown up in Philadelphia, my personal favorite place is the outdoor market led by different Southeast Asian groups at FDR Park.
